Coming hard on the WWDC Apple announcements, it's clear Redmond is stepping up its game. With Skype and the still-not-closed Yammer acquisitions, Steve Sinofsky is trying to buy his way in to social. But once the smoke clears, straddling the desktop and tablet metaphors may turn out to be the biggest threat to Office yet. The only way to save Office revenue may be to give away social and the hardware to run it.
